The work consists of several parts/books describing important views of nature and art in all parts of the world.

William Henry Bartlett. Born in Kentish Town, London in 1809, the young Bartlett was apprenticed to John Britton (1771-1857). He became one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation, traveling not just throughout Britain, but to the Americas in 1839-42. In the mid/late 1840s, he traveled extensively in the Balkans and the Middle East. He died of fever on board a ship returning from his last trip to Israel in 1854.
