James Walter Folger (1851-1918) was an American artist from Nantucket, he was mainly self-taught. Folger briefly worked in 1869 as a journeyman for a wood carver in Cambridge, Massachusetts,

and continued to create carved animal heads, ornamental carvings, and historical dioramas.

He was also a painter in oil and watercolor, mostly creating scenes in and around Nantucket. His work was displayed locally and exhibitions were mentioned frequently in the Inquiry Mirror newspaper.

Folger is also believed to be the illustrator of Arthur Gardner's Wrecks Around Nantucket (1915).
