Matthew Courtney (America, b.1954) is a street artist who has been creating art in New York City for nearly two decades. His story is powerful: despite facing challenges like living with AIDS, he continues to pursue his passion for art. You’ll find him sitting on the “Steps to Nowhere, ” which is quite literally a staircase that disappears into a wall next to the J. Crew store in Soho.

His pieces often feature colorful images and slogans painted on old newspapers. These unique canvases add an extra layer of history and context to his art.

Artistic Range:

  • Graphic Portraiture: Inspired by Pop art, he creates eye-catching portraits that play with color and form.
  • Sculptures: On a larger scale, he transforms everyday materials into poetic and sometimes absurd juxtapositions of form and meaning. Surrealist influences shine through in his sculptures/

Courtney’s work has been featured in key galleries and museums. For instance, the Woodmere Art Museum.
